Summary

Small three-layer coils with two kinds of mandrels: aluminium oxide and magnesium oxide, were fabricated using Chevrel-phase PMS superconducting wires prepared by a powder process. An excellent critical-current density of 3 x 10000 A/cm2 at B = 12 T was obtained with a magnesium oxide mandrel (84% of the best critical-current densities for the same short wire). With aluminium oxide, the critical-current density was only 60%. The thermal expansion coefficient and critical-currents strain property of the PMS wires were also determined. The origin of critical-current density degradation for the small coils was found to be the strain applied from mandrels during the cooling process.
