Summary

THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES PAPERS GIVEN AT A SEMINAR IN LONDON. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE HISTORY OF THE DISEASE FROM THE ORIGINAL OUTBREAK IN 1976 TO THE PRESENT. THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE BACTERIA PROLIFERATE ARE DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH COUNTER MEASURES. THE RISK OF INFECTION IS LIMITED TO BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION IN THE WATER AND THE AMOUNT OF THIS WATER DISPERSED AS AN AEROSOL. DRAUGHT ELIMINATORS IN COOLING TOWERS AND MINIMAL SPLASHING FROM HIGH TEMPERATURE TAPS AND SHOWERS CAN REDUCE THE AEROSOL EFFECT. THE DESIGN FEATURES OF A PLANT WHICH ARE LIKELY TO GIVE RISE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF THE DISEASE ARE CONSIDERED IN DETAIL BOTH FROM A CONTRACTORS AND USERS POINT OF VIEW. G.R.S.
