Summary
four R744 units, able to provide all thermal services, were installed in a resort located in Sicily, where outdoor temperature can frequently exceed 40°C during the summertime. The design includes remote heat exchangers that can work as gas coolers in chiller mode and as evaporators in heat pump mode. Separate heat exchangers are in place for hot and chilled water. Gravity-fed plate evaporators are flooded to fully exploit cold water production 7/12°C at high evaporation temperature. Cooling and heating can operate simultaneously or independently to match hotel requirements. The paper reports the data collected from the field during the cooling and heating season and highlights both operations and performance to show the feasibility and efficiency of R744 chiller/heat pumps for high-demanding buildings in the South Mediterranean Climate.
