Flooded evaporators for LiBr-H2O absorption chillers: modelling and validation.

Author(s) : CASTRO J., FARNÓS J., OLIVA A., et al.

Summary

Falling film is the typical configuration of the evaporator of LiBr-H2O absorption chillers. However, this type of configuration requires usually an additional refrigerant pump to take the maximum advantage of the heat transfer area. For small capacity absorption chillers it is interesting to remove the refrigerant pump, to reduce the final price. An interesting alternative is flooded evaporators. Their design presents the main difficult of dealing with lower heat transfer coefficients with respect falling film ones. Therefore, could be necessary to increase the heat transfer area in such heat exchangers. In this work, a model for the design and prediction of flooded evaporators is presented. The model is validated with experimental data of other authors of two tube-fin flooded evaporators. The agreement is under 20% in the prediction of the heat exchanged. Finally, an example of design for a small capacity LiBr-H2O machine is presented.
