Flow instabilities in long nitrogen cooling channels.

Summary

The hydraulic characteristics in superconducting power transmission line, especially various flow instabilities which may possibly occur, are very important to design the transmission line. To investigate the flow instabilities, the authors have conducted cooling tests of a 100-m long duplex-counter-flow tube with liquid nitrogen and observed two kinds of flow instabilities. One is the density wave oscillation and the other may be the Ledinegg instability. The conditions under which flow instabilities can occur have been discussed in the paper.
