Summary

Simulation of the food market over the period of 2000-2003 was much more favourable for the customers than the producers and processors of agricultural commodities. The market featured increasing procurement and thus a decline in the prices of major agricultural products, increasing production and market deliveries of food products and decline in their relative prices. The relatively low level of food prices stimulated demand. On the other hand, the low rate of personal income growth along with significant increases in the prices of non-food products reduced the growth of consumption. The consumption of food products in 2004 will largely depend upon the extent to which exports would remove supply pressure on the domestic market and thus increase the prices.
