IN AN AIR-CONDITIONING SYSTEM UNDER LOW AMBIENT CONDITIONS IT IS OFTEN POSSIBLE TO SATISFY CHILLED WATER SUPPLY TEMPERATURE BY ROUTING SYSTEM WATER OVER THE CONDENSER COOLING TOWER. THE ARTICLE OUTLINES VARIOUS ALTERNATIVES OF COOLING TOWER TO WATER HEAT TRANSFER AND DESCRIBES THE WATER CIRCUIT PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE METHODS OF BALANCING NORMAL WITH FREE-COOLING CYCLE REQUIREMENTS. ALTHOUGH CONSIDERABLE ENERGY SAVING IS LIKELY TO BE POSSIBLEIN MANY APPLICATIONS, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SYSTEM WHICH THE DESIGNER MUST TAKE INTO ACCOUNT.
