FREEZE-DRYING: FROM EMPIRICISM TO PREDICTABILITY.

Author(s) : FRANKS F.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PARAMETERS WHICH GOVERN THE BEHAVIOUR OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS DURING FREEZING AND DRYING ARE DISCUSSED. SUCCESSFUL FREEZE-DRYING CRITICALLY DEPENDS ON THE COMPLEX INTERPLAY OF THESE PARAMETERS. IT IS SHOWN HOW AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASIC SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES CAN REMOVE MOST OF THE EMPIRICISM FROM FREEZE-DRYING AND LEAD TO MORE EFFICIENT PROCESS CYCLES AND TO PRODUCTS OF SUPERIOR QUALITY AND STABILITY.
