Summary

THE NEED TO FIND ALTERNATIVES FOR THE HERRING BECAME RELEVANT DUE TO THE CATCH RESTRICTION DURING THE SEVENTIES AND THE DUTCH TRAWLER OWNERS MANAGED SUCCESSFULLY TO CHANGE OVER TO MACKEREL. THIS MEANT A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE IN FREEZING CAPACITIES FOR THE TRAWLERS BUILT DURING THE LAST DECADE. THE COOLING PLANTS ON BOARD THESE TRAWLERS ARE VERY SOPHISTICATED, NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE HUGE CAPACITIES, BUT ALSO DUE TO LACK OF AVAILABLE SPACE, THE CONDITIONS ON BOARD AND THE DISCONTINUITY IN OPERATIONS.
