Summary
IN THE SYSTEM DESCRIBED, FIXED VOLTAGE AND FREQUENCY ALTERNATING CURRENT IS CONVERTED TO VARIABLE DIRECT CURRENT AND FILTERED TO OBTAIN SMOOTHED POWER. A 3-PHASE INVERTER THEN CONVERTS THIS TO VARIABLE FREQUENCY AND VARIABLE VOLTAGE ALTERNATING CURRENT TO DRIVE AN INDUCTION MOTOR FOR A CENTRIFUGAL COMPRESSOR. A LOW FREQUENCY ALLOWS HIGH STARTING TORQUE TO BE OBTAINED WITHOUT THE USUAL HIGH CURRENT SURGES. THE VOLTAGE CAN BE CONTROLLED TO MAINTAIN CONSTANT CURRENT DURING MOTOR ACCELERATION. CAPACITY CONTROL IS THEN EFFECTED BY A COMBINATION OF SPEED CONTROL THROUGH VARYING FREQUENCY, AND GUIDE VANES. BY COMBINING BOTH, THE MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY CAN BE OBTAINED AND SURGE AVOIDED OVER A WIDER RANGE. D.W.H.
