Summary

THE RESULTS OF FEMORO-POPLITEAL BY-PASS IN ARTERITIS POINT OUT THAT SELECTED FROZEN VENOUS HOMOGRAFT IS RELIABLE AS AN ARTERIAL REPLACEMENT WHEN AUTOGRAFT IS NOT AVAILABLE. THE INDICATIONS OF SUCH IMPLANTATIONS ARE DIVERSE: ARTERITIS, ANEURYSMA, ARTERIAL TRAUMATISM, CORONARY BY-PASS, HEMODIALYSIS. THE GRAFTS ARE HARVESTED BY STRIPPING AND SELECTED AT THE STAGE OF MODERATE FIBROUS DISTROPHY. THEY ARE FROZEN AT 244 K (-29 DEG C) AND STORED UP TO AN OPTIMAL TIME OF 8 TO 30 DAYS. THE AUTOLYSIS DUE TO FREEZING REDUCES THE ANTIGENICITY OF THE GRAFT WHICH, AFTER IMPLANTATION, IS AFFECTED BY THE USUAL CHANGES OF ANY KIND IN REMOVED VENOUS GRAFTS, EVEN AUTOGRAFTS, SUBJECTED TO ARTERIAL HEMODYNAMICS.
