Summary

PREVENTION OF TRANSFUSION-ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS IS MOST IMPORTANT IN TRANSFUSION MEDICINE TODAY. MOREOVER, IN JAPAN, ABOUT 100 CASES OF TRANSFUSION-ASSOCIATED GRAFT-VERSUS-HOST DISEASE (GVHD) HAVE BEEN REPORTED. MOST OF THOSE PATIENTS WITH GVHD HAD UNDERGONE OPEN HEART SURGERY. IN ADDITION, THE AUTHORS ALSO EXPERIENCED THREE CASES OF TRNS-O H.I FEBRUARY 1986, THE AUTHORS STARTED TO USE AUTOLOGOUS FROZEN BLOOD FOR PATIENTS WHO UNDERWENT OPEN HEART SURGERY OR ORTHOPEDIC OPERATIONS. THE PATIENTS' WHOLE BLOOD WAS COLLECTED, CENTRIFUGED AND THE PLASMA REMOVED AND KEPT AT 233 K (-40 DEG C). PACKED RED BLOOD CELLS WERE KEPT FROZEN AT 193 K (-80DEG C) ACCORDING TO HUGGINS' METHOD. NONE OF THE PATIENTS EXPERIENCED ANY ADVERSE EFFECTS FROM TRANSFUSION OF FROZEN AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD.
