Summary

The authors present a model that describes the alternating-current susceptibility in thin films, in the region near critical temperature, where high-critical temperature superconducting materials have a non-linear response to even very small applied magnetic alternating current fields. Measurements of the alternating-current susceptibility as a function of temperature up to the ninth harmonic were carried out on YBCO thin films prepared by MOCVD. The alternating-current field (1.6-800 A/m) was applied perpendicular to the film plane. The experimental results show very good agreement with the proposed theoretical model and suggest that pinning and thermally activated flux flow play an essential role in the magnetic response of single crystal YBCO thin films.
