FURTHER RESULTS OF A ROTARY COMPRESSOR FOR AN AIRCRAFT POD COOLING SYSTEM.

Summary

THE DESIGN OF A R114 SLIDING VANE, ROTARY PISTON COMPRESSOR HAD TO BE CHANGED TO ACCOMODATE A 36% CAPACITY INCREASE AND 25% OCCUPIED VOLUME DECREASE. THE ONLY OPTION WAS TO INCREASE THE SPEED FROM 3,700 TO 5,600 RPM. TWO PROBLEMS DEVELOPED. THE FIRST A LACK OF OIL SEPARATION WHICH WAS OVERCOME BY REDESIGNING THE HERMETIC MOTOR STATOR SUPPORT AND DRAINAGE AREA, USING STANDARD PIPELINE CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING OIL CARRYOVER. THE SECOND WAS INCREASED WEAR, BOTH ON THE ALUMINIUM-SILICATE SLIDING VANE, WHICH WAS SUCCESSFULLY CHANGED TO A THERMOPLASTIC, AND ON CYLINDER END WEAR. INCREASE IN END CLEARANCE OVERCAME THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT LOSS, AS THE HIGHER SPEED COUNTERED THE CLEARANCE SPACE, AND LEAKAGE WAS ACTUALLY REDUCED. D.W.H.
