Summary

This article is the Italian translation of a review article published in issue 2009-2 of the Bulletin of the IIR (see reference 2009-1882). The phase-out of R22 is coming closer and will affect the refrigeration and AC industry in all regions of the world. In Europe, the use of virgin R22 for service will be prohibited by the end of 2009, and a shortage of R22 is likely to occur. The demand for and importance of sustainable solutions is increasing. Energy efficiency and low environmental impact are key issues. Ammonia is a very efficient refrigerant which has a proven track record within industrial refrigeration. Use of ammonia for applications outside traditional refrigeration is increasing, and ammonia is seen as a viable natural alternative to halocarbons for both refrigeration and AC systems when handled correctly. With a focus on Europe, current regulations, applications, technology and trends are described in this article. A TEWI analysis is presented for an ammonia air-conditioning chiller. Challenges for more widespread use such as safety, charge reduction and first cost are discussed.
