Summary

When electric motors are connected directly to power mains, a starting current which is five to eight times as high as the nominal current of the motor occurs. These current peaks (transients) cause a reaction in the power mains, such as voltage breakdowns, which affect the other users of the mains, and then often lead to trouble with computers. Moreover, fast starting and fast changes in feeding the motor cause mechanical overstress, as well as strong shocks for the motor and crank mechanisms. This leads to excessive wear.
