Summary

The document deals with the main elements of a training course for refrigeration technicians. First of all some physical facts are reviewed, then the principles of refrigeration are explained, in particular the vapour compression cycle. Properties of different refrigerants, their classification (CFC, HCFC, HFC, FC) and their involvement in ozone-depletion (ODP) and greenhouse-effect phenomena (TEWI) are described. Their use as transition or substitute fluids and the choice of suitable oils is discussed. Different refrigerant recovery techniques, according to installation, fluid, transfer in liquid or gas, are detailed. Finally, the paper describes the criteria for the choice of the best method of plant conversion.
