HANDLING COLD STORAGE CARGO.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF A SYSTEM, DEVELOPED BY IHI IN CO-OPERATION WITH TOKYO SHOSEN KAISHA, FOR HANDLING REFRIGERATED CARGOES IN MULTI-PURPOSE REFRIGERATED SHIPS. THE FIRST OF THESE SYSTEMS IS BEING INSTALLED IN A VESSEL, NOW BUILDING FOR TSK, WHICH HAS A NUMBER OF HORIZONTAL REFRIGERATED-CARGO COMPARTMENTS. THE DIFFICULTY OF HANDLING CARGO FOR THESE HORIZONTAL COMPARTMENTS WILL BE OVERCOME BY THIS NEW SYSTEM, WHICH HAS A SPECIAL TYPE OF OVERHEAD TRAVELLING CRANE AND A PUSH-PULL MECHANISM, RESEMBLING THE FORKS OF A FORK-LIFT TRUCK, WHICH ENABLES CARGOES ON THIN (1. 8 MM) SHEET PALLETS TO BE HANDLED EFFICIENTLY.
