Summary

THE AUTHOR SURVEYS THE PRACTICAL PROBLEMS OF INSTALLED SYSTEMS OF BUILDING COMFORT CONTROL USING DDC. HE CONCLUDES THAT THE ENORMOUS POTENTIAL OF DDC HAS BEEN ITS ENEMY IN MANY CASES, RESULTING IN SYSTEMS FAR TOO COMPLEX TO BE UNDERSTOOD AND READILY USED BY OPERATORS. DESIGNERS HAVE BEEN TEMPTED ALSO TO COMPLICATE CONTROL SENSING UNNECESSARILY AND TO INSTAL LESS RELIABLE ULTRA-SENSITIVE CONTROL UNITS IN CEILING VOIDS OVER TENANTED BUILDING AREAS, CAUSING MAINTENANCE DIFFICULTIES. BAD SOFTWARE IDENTIFICATION, LACK OF TRAINED INSTALLERS/MAINTAINERS, AND POOR INSTRUCTIONS LEAD TO POOR FUNCTIONING IN SOME INSTANCES. D.W.H.
