Heat and mass transfer studies in a horizontal tube falling film absorber.
Author(s) : PISE A. T., DEVOTTA S., KANT K.
Summary
Experimental studies were conducted on a falling film absorber of a LiBr-H2O refrigeration system to analyse the transfer process during the absorption of water vapour in the aqueous solution of lithium bromide. The experiments were carried out at different flow rates and concentrations of lithium bromide. At a low flow rate of about 0.02 kg/m.s (film Re. 17-20), mass absorption was found to be greater due to higher residence time of the solution. However, the heat transfer coefficients were increased as the solution flow rate was increased; the mass absorption was observed to be greater at higher concentration of LiBr. The addition of a surface-active agent to a falling liquid film changed the fluid mechanical behaviour of the film. The study describes the flow patterns and the transfer process after an addition of a surfactant. The experiments were carried out with additives n-octanol, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and n-heptanol. They were tested at low flow rates at which mass absorption was observed to be greater and results were compared with and without surfactants. The additive 2-ethyl-1-hexonal was observed to give greater enhancement than n-octanol and n-heptanol. The enhancement in mass absorption was observed to be highest at 1000 ppm, in the range of the additive concentration tested.
