Heat exchangers for base-load LNG plants.

Summary

Until today, large multi stream coil-wound heat exchangers have been the undisputed choice for the main heat exchanger in base-load LNG plants. They have proved to be reliable units throughout many years of operation. Sintef Refrigeration Engineering has for the last 10 years developed expertise about LNG heat exchangers. Two test plants for measurements of heat transfer and pressure drop at the tubeside and the shellside of the LNG coil-wound heat exchanger have been built. Measurements, using condensing and evaporating pure and mixed hydrocarbons, have been carried out. The most promising types are the plate-fin heat exchanger, the Packinox welded plate heat exchangers and the Heatric printed circuit heat exchangers. Initial studies about new LNG heat exchangers have been performed.
