Summary

The term DSM is applied to programs run by utilities which aim at improving the performance of energy supply by influencing the way it is used by the consumer. While DSM applies to both electric and gas supply, the article focuses on DSM as applied to electricity consumption, and its particular relevance to electric heat pumps. The reason why utilities carry out DSM programs is discussed and the use of heat pumps is put in context. The blue boxes provide an insight into heat pump related DSM programs in the Heat Pump Center member countries, as well as in Germany and Sweden. Information is also given on a new International Energy Agency initiative.
