THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE USE MADE OF PROCESS INTEGRATION AT THE ELECTRICITY COUNCIL RESEARCH CENTRE AT CAPENHURST AND HOW IT HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO COVER ELECTRIC HEAT PUMPS FOR ENERGY RECOVERY. THE GRAND COMPOSITE CURVE FOR THE PROCESS IS THE BASIS OF THE METHOD, TOGETHER WITH MODELS OF HEAT PUMP THERMODYNAMIC CYCLES AND WORK FLUID PROPERTIES WHICH ARE NEEDED FOR RELIABLE CAPITAL COST ESTIMATES. THESE VARIOUS COMPONENTS ARE COMBINED WITH THE MORE USUAL METHODS OF PROCESS INTEGRATION IN A COMPUTER PROGRAM IN PROLOG AND TAX GRAPHICS WORKSTATION.
