THE ARTICLE ANALYSES THE TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF HEAT PUMPS IN THE LAST 10 YEARS. RELATED TO THESE DEVICES ARE: ELECTRICAL COMPRESSION DEVICES, THERMAL DRIVEN MACHINES, ADSORPTION MACHINES AND MACHINES WITH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES. ELECTRICAL HEAT PUMPS HAVE SEEN INTERESTING DEVELOPMENT IN THEIR COMPONENTS, PARTICULARLY THOSE OF THE COMPRESSOR (WITH THE ADOPTION OF SCREW AND SCROLL COMPRESSORS) AND THOSE OF THE THERMAL EXCHANGE BATTERIES. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN PROGRESS IN ELECTRONICS. ABSORBENT HEAT PUMPS HAVE RAPIDLY SPREAD AS PROTOTYPES IN HIGH-POWERED, YEAR-ROUND MACHINES. DEVELOPMENTS CONCERNING ENGINES ARE ALSO INTERESTING, ESPECIALLY IN THE LIGHT OF A FRESH INTEREST FOR THE STIRLING. RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF SUBSTANCES IS CONSIDERABLE, BOTH TO FIND SUBSTANCES MORE SUITABLE FROM A THERMODYNAMIC POINT OF VIEW AND TO REPLACE CFCS. IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS HAVE ALSO OCCURRED IN THERECOVERY OF HEAT BUILD-UPS IN THE WHEREAS IN SOME COUNTRIES MORE ATTENTION IS PAID TO THE USE OF HEAT PUMPS IN DISTRICT HEATING.
