Summary

THE ARLOV SUGAR REFINERY AT MALMO, SOUTHERN SWEDEN REQUIRES LARGE QUANTITIES OF LOW PRESSURE STEAM FOR THE SUGAR REFINING PROCESS. THE INSTALLATION OF A STEAM TURBINE DRIVEN 10.5 MW CONDENSING CAPACITY, HEAT PUMP NOW MEANS THAT THE WASTE HEAT CAN BE USED FOR BOTH SITE AND DISTRICT HEATING. THE HEAT PUMP COMPRESSOR IS A TWO-STAGE RADIAL TURBINE COMPRESSOR DRIVEN THROUGH A GEAR BOX DIRECTLY BY THE STEAM TURBINE. WHEN THE HEAT PUMP STEAM TURBINE IS RUNNING AT DESIGN CAPACITY IT WILL RECOVER 10.5 MW FROM THE SUGAR PROCESS AND PRODUCE 169 MW HOT WATER WITH A LIVE STEAM HEAT DEMAND OF 6.4 MW. FIGURES ARE GIVEN WHICH SHOW THE HEAT PUMP RECOVERY PLANT GIVES INCOME AND SAVINGS VALUED AT 620,000 POUNDS PER ANNUM. A SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM OF THE INSTALLATION IS SUPPLIED. (INT. BUILD. SERV.
