Summary

For the past five years, low-capacity heat pumps have been enhanced by new developments, particularly for heating and cooling residential buildings. Sales doubled in France between 2000 and 2001. By drawing upon surrounding energy sources (air, water or ground), these thermodynamic generators provide high energy efficiency (much higher than with traditional heating methods) using natural gas or fuel: for every kWh consumed, the heat pump provides between 2 and 4 kWh for heating and air conditioning. For a machine with a COP of 4, 3/4 of the energy produced therefore comes from the environment and 1/4 comes from the electric energy needed to run the heat pump. Some European Union countries even consider that this heating solution uses a renewable energy source, just like wind or solar energy.
