Summary

THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT IN THE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING INDUSTRY ENERGY SAVINGS ARE CONSIDERED AS A CAPITAL INVESTMENT. ILLUSTRATIONS ARE GIVEN OF THE FORMULAE FROM THE ASHRAE GUIDE WHICH DETERMINE THE INVESTMENT NECESSARY TO PRODUCE ENERGY SAVINGS. FOUR EXAMPLES ARE THEN GIVEN IN WHICH HEAT RECOVERY TECHNIQUES HAVE BEEN APPLIED. IN ALL FOUR IT HAS BEEN NECESSARY FOR THE REFRIGERATION ENGINEER TO ESTABLISH THE REAL CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS. IN ONE EXAMPLE A PLANT WAS REQUESTED FOR COOLING A WET GAS STREAM TO 277 K (4 DEG C). THE REAL REQUIREMENT WAS FOR IT TO REACH A 277 K DEW POINT, THE TEMPERATURE COULD BE HIGHER. THE 277 K GAS COULD THEREFORE BE USED IN A REGENERATIVE HEAT EXCHANGER FOR PRE-COOLING THE INLET STREAM. D.W.H.
