Heat transfer additives for use in high temperature applications.

Summary

Recent developments in advanced cycles require much higher operating temperatures than those of the conventional double effect chiller. In support of the development effort on high temperature technologies, the discovery of effective additives which may be suitable in lithium bromide solution at the required high temperature level is reported. An experimental study of water vapour absorption into a vertical falling film of aqueous lithium bromide with the presence of various potential additives was performed. Eight additives including 2-ethyl-1-hexanol were tested in the falling film absorption experiments and all were found to be effective to varying degrees. It was observed that effective additives introduce a vigourous mixing only when water vapour absorbs into the aqueous lithium bromide film. A simple but effective model was developed to predict the heat and mass transfer along the absorber length.
