Summary

HEAT TRANSFER AND PRESSURE DROP OF THE CROSSFLOW ON THE SHELL-SIDE OF STAGGERED TUBE-BANKS, HAVING DIFFERENT TRANSVERSAL AND LONGITUDINAL PITCHES HAVE BEEN STUDIED EXPERIMENTALLY. THE HEAT TRANSFER WAS DETERMINED WITH THE AID OF THE ANALOGY BETWEEN HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER FROM MEASUREMENTS OF THE MASS DIFFUSION OF NAPHTHALENE. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT EXCHANGERS WITH OVAL-SHAPED TUBES HAVE CONSIDERABLY SMALLER FRONT AREAS ON THE SHELL-SIDE COMPARED TO THOSE WITH CIRCULAR TUBES.
