Heat transfer convection measurements of boiling CO2 in small horizontal tubes at low temperature.

Number: pap. ID: 711

Author(s) : ORIUNNO M., HEMINK G.

Summary

The authors measured the heat transfer coefficients of boiling carbon dioxide (CO2) in small horizontal tube for temperatures ranges below 0°C. The tubes have an inner diameter of 1.6 mm and 2.16 mm with wall thickness of 280 and 305 µm, respectively. They are representative of the cooling channels sizes under consideration for the cooling of Pixel detectors for future particle colliders. The data have been collected for saturation temperatures between -45 and -15°C, with mass fluxes in the range of 370 to 1000 kg/m3, and heat fluxes between 5 and 41 kW/m3. Data show good agreement with the Flow Pattern Maps model of Thome and Cheng over a large vapor quality range, but show a higher value of dry-out compared to that predicted by their model.
