Heat transfer for different slurries flowing in heat exchangers.

Author(s) : BEDECARRATS J. P., STRUB F., STUTZ B., et al.

Summary

Studies have been conducted on polypropylene particles with a density close to that of ice. Heat transfer and pressure drop were experimentally investigated for spherical particles - water slurries flowing in the internal tube of a line coaxial exchanger. The type of heat exchanger studied is a single tube double pipe heat exchanger. Three different inner tubes were studied, one with a smooth surface and the others with an improved surface. Only a pure counter flow arrangement was studied. The authors found that the presence of particles has no effect on the tube side heat transfer coefficients. Then the heat transfer performance of the exchanger with the smooth tube was investigated with ice slurry (water-ethanol mixture).
