Summary

Helium is a by-product obtained from natural gas fields. Known and economically exploitable reserves account for 270 years of use at the present rate of global consumption. The main production plants are situated in the USA, Algeria, Russia and Poland. Helium is transported in liquid form, by ship or truck, from the liquefaction plants to the treatment stations. These stations transfer the helium into smaller containers that are more specifically adapted to the user's needs. The final part of the article is devoted to a presentation of its main applications.
