Herschel-Planck, and the next steps in space cryogenics.
Author(s) : COLLAUDIN B., LINDER M., RANDO N.
Summary
The paper first describes the status of Herschel and Planck cryogenics systems, before extrapolating the needs for future missions. Herschel and Planck are 2 ESA astronomical satellites. Both have very low temperatures detectors. Herschel is a far-infrared space observatory. It is based on a superfluid helium dewar. Planck is a cosmological survey mission. Its cryogenics system includes several stages down to a 0.1 K dilution cooler. Future needs for space cryogenics systems are triggered by the need to improve the performance of detectors for astronomy (very low temperatures). Earth observations and telecommunication require extremely reliable off-the-shelf coolers for temperatures below 100 K.
