Summary

MAINTAINS THAT EXTENSIVE HIDDEN POLLUTION SOURCES IN BUILDING MATERIALS AND VENTILATION SYSTEMS ARE A LIKELY EXPLANATION OF THE SICK BUILDING SYNDROME. DESCRIBES A FIELD STUDY WHERE FOR EACH OCCUPANT IN 15 RANDOMLY SELECTED OFFICE BUILDINGS THERE WERE ON AVERAGE 6 TO 7 HIDDEN OLFS: 1 TO 2 IN THE MATERIALS IN THE SPACE, 3 IN THE VENTILATION SYSTEM AND 2 CAUSED BY TOBACCO SMOKE. THE VENTILATION RATE WAS AROUND 25 L/S PER OCCUPANT, BUT ONLY 4 L/S PER OLF, WHICH EXPLAINS WHY 34% JUDGED THE INDOOR AIRTO BE UNACCEPTABLE. THE RESULTS ARE IN CONTRAST WITH VENTILATION STANDARDS WHICH ASSUME PEOPLE TO BE THE PRINCIPAL, OR EXCLUSIVE, POLLUTERS IN OFFICES AND SIMILAR SPACES.
