Summary

THE AUTHOR OUTLINES THE WAY IN WHICH REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS HAVE ADOPTED ELECTRONIC CONTROL FOR BETTER, MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT CONTROL, AND ALSO SOME RECENT INNOVATIONS WHICH WOULD BE UNWORKABLE WITHOUT REFRIGERATED COOLING. TWO CASES OF THE LATTER ARE DESCRIBED. MODERN MACHINE TOOLS OPERATE AT MUCH HIGHERSPEEDS. LUBRICATING OIL MUST BE COOLED, OTHERWISE TOOLS AND BEARINGS OVERHEAT AND ACCURACY IS IMPARED BY DIFFERENTIAL EXPANSION. TO COUNTER THIS, OIL MUST BE COOLED TO NEAR AMBIENT TEMPERATURE. LASERS ARE ONLY ABOUT 90% EFFICIENT. THE WASTED ENERGY CAN OVERHEAT THE LASER BEAM PRODUCTION PROCESS, PARTICULARLY BY DISTORTING MIRRORS IN THE OPTIC CIRCUIT. ACCURATE COOLING IS REQUIRED. D.W.H.
