Summary

Thermal refrigeration, refrigeration systems or heat pumps, essentially use thermal energy to operate. As this energy form is lower grade than that of the mechanical energy used by mechanical refrigeration systems, it is necessary to provide the system with additional thermal energy in order to achieve the same levels of refrigeration. This lower "thermal efficiency" is of course a drawback, but it can be greatly compensated by the fact that thermal energy is much more easily available than mechanical energy.
