The author explains the meaning of liquid subcooling, and describes the effects of pipe and fitting pressure drop, and vertical lift pressure drop, in forming flash gas at entry to an expansion valve. Examples are given of the subcooling measurement and the amount of subcooling required to compensate for pressure drop. Means of subcooling are described. D.W.H.
