Summary

Overall reduction in the energy consumption of domestic refrigeration appliances requires stimuli designed to promote sales of high-performance equipment now available on the market and to promote the development of even more efficient appliances. Several types of instruments have been implemented in various parts of the world and have proven to be effective: compulsory or voluntary energy labelling, minimum energy performance thresholds and voluntary agreements. By combining energy labelling and minimum energy performance thresholds, the market has been improved and the number of energy-efficient products has risen. Developing countries are particularly concerned, given the growth in their domestic-appliance markets.
