Hybrid split air-conditioning system with an evaporative condenser for energy conservation.

Author(s) : PRASAD M.

Summary

The paper introduces a split air-conditioning system with an evaporative condenser having an innovative approach to achieve better performance. This is important in tropical countries where the ambient air temperature is very high, leading to high head pressure. Thus, power consumption becomes higher and at the same time maintenance costs rise. In this study, a conventional split air-conditioner of 1.5 ton (5.25 kW capacity) was converted into the new system presented by replacing the air-cooled condenser by an evaporatively cooled condenser. The energy consumption for the mechanical refrigeration system as well as for the evaporative cooling system was determined. It has been found that the head pressure drops from about 21 bar to 16-17 bar. Thus the compressor runs cool, thus extending the life of the compressor. Economic analysis shows a tremendous reduction in the energy demand as well as the running costs. The energy saving for the split system with evaporative condenser is 15% compared with a conventional system. On the other hand, for the seasonal operation (from April to October) the split air conditioner having the hybrid mode of operation renders energy saving of 39% with air-cooled condenser and with evaporative condenser 56% being both compared to the conventional split air conditioner.
