Type of article: Periodical article, Case study
Summary
This article is the Spanish translation of an article presented at the IIR meeting in Castá Papiernicka, Czech Republic (see the Bulletin of the IIR, reference 2007-0396). As a consequence of global warming concern, the developed nations must reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrocarbons represent a good answer to Kyoto Protocol requirements, considering both the direct effect of low GWP value and the indirect effect of reduced energy consumption. Common availability, low cost, compatibility with oils and materials used for compressor and refrigeration system are the advantages. The safety issue related to flammability, can represent an obstacle for hydrocarbon diffusion only in large applications, because present limitation in refrigerant charge. Isobutane (R-600a) is largely diffused in household European market, while propane (R-290) is starting to be diffused in some low temperature commercial application, like ice cream freezers. The use of heat pumps in dryers, tap water heaters and similar applications becomes to be diffused, and R-134a is the preferred refrigerant till today. The combination of the heat pumps' energy efficiency with hydrocarbons green properties is opening a wide range of new opportunities. Two different applications using R-290 compressors are presented in this article. Heat pump working range, compressor reliability and energy efficiency comparison with equivalent R-134a equipments are discussed, and some experimental results are shown.
