Hydrocarbons in heat pumps: An experimental investigation on the influence of an internal heat exchanger.

Summary
In heat pumps, the use of hydrocarbons and their mixtures becomes increasingly important due to their low global warming potential and thermodynamic potential. The overall potential and the corresponding overall efficiency depend on the refrigerants, mixture composition, and cycle configuration (e.g., basic cycle and internal heat exchanger cycle). While the theoretical potential is investigated in the literature, there is a lack of experimental validation. Therefore, this work evaluates three hydrocarbons (R290, R600a, R436A) and R134a experimentally in a brine-water heat pump test bench. The test bench design enables to switch between the basic and internal heat exchanger cycle analyzing the cycle configuration and the refrigerant influence on the performance simultaneously. In experiments, R290 shows the highest efficiency for all operating points. Adding an internal heat exchanger improves the efficiency for all refrigerants and R436A achieves the highest efficiency improvements of up to 27.5%.
