Hydrotreated oils for ammonia refrigeration.

Summary
Common naphtenic based lubricating oils are purified of undesirable molecules to only about 80%. Some aromatics, sulphur and nitrogen remain which restrict the service life to about 2,000 hours in an ammonia compressor. Oils which undergo a process of severe hydrotreatment at very high temperature and pressure have molecules rearranged and fully saturated, and many undesirables are removed. The service life is extended to about 15,000 hours and the improved lubrication properties result in a power saving of about 10% in reciprocating compressors. D.W.H.
