HYPERQUENCHING OF WATER AND DILUTE AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS INTO THEIR GLASSY STATES: AN APPROACH TO CRYOFIXATION.
Author(s) : MAYER E.
Type of article: Article
Summary
THE METHODS FOR VITRIFYING LIQUID WATER AND DILUTE AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS ARE REVIEWED. ESTIMATES FOR COOLING RATE AND SAMPLE SIZE, THE PARAMETERS MOST IMPORTANT FOR VITRIFICATION, ARE GIVENAND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RATE OF COOLING TO CRYOFIXATION OF BIOLOGICAL SPECIMENS IS DISCUSSED. THE RECENT DETECTION OF A GLASS-LIQUID TRANSITION AND ITS REVERSIBILITY IS PROOF THAT HYPERQUENCHED LIQUID WATER IS TRULY GLASSY. THE GLASSY STATES OF WATER AND OF DILUTE AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS HAVE BEEN STUDIED BY DIFFRACTION, BY DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY AND BY INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY.
