Summary
AS 1.2-PROPANEDIOL IS PROGRESSIVELY REPLACED BY METHANOL IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS WITH 35% SOLUTES, THE GLASS-FORMING TENDENCY REMAINS CONSTANT UP TO 20% METHANOL (1.2-PROPANEDIOL + METHANOL) THEN DECREASES. THIS APPEARS TO BE RELATED TO THE DIFFICULTY OF CRYSTALLIZATION OF THE METHANOL HYDRATE. THEREFORE UP TO 20% 1.2-PROPANEDIOL MAY BE REPLACED BY METHANOL WITHOUT DIMINISHING THE ABILITY TO OBTAIN COMPLETE VITRIFICATION OF CELL SOLUTIONS IF CELLS BETTERWITHSTAND SUCH SOLUTIONS THAN THOSE WHERE 1.2-PROPANEDIOL IS THE SINGLE CRYOPROTECTANT.
