Summary
Ice slurry as secondary refrigerant and energy storage medium is a promising technology in air conditioning and cooling applications. The use of ice slurry as secondary refrigerant can reduce the exergy losses of a system and the refrigeration charge in the primary system and also uncouple the cooling demand from the cold production of refrigeration systems. Ice slurry is an excellent cold-storage medium, which can assist in increasing the share of renewable energy sources. Important parameters that influence the thermophysical and fluid parameters of ice slurry are the ice-particle size and the size distribution as well as the shape and surface characteristics of the ice particles. Knowledge of the growth and decay of ice particles in ice slurry systems is very important for particle-size distribution as well as for the surface properties. Some research on ice growth and decay has been performed in different fields. This paper is a review on the published research on the ice crystal growth and decay. The results achieved for particle size and growth in existing ice slurry systems are reviewed and summarized. Different factors influence ice formation and size change of ice crystals. Factors such as different additives in different concentrations, different ice slurry generation processes and storage methods of the ice slurry system are shown and the results available in the open literature are summarized. A suitable test setup is required for the observation and measurement of the ice particles. The available observation and measurement methods are reviewed. There is still a lot of work to be done. So the last part of this paper is about the research planned at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences in the field of ice-particle growth in ice slurry systems.
