Summary

At temperatures below the freezing point of water ice slurry facilitates efficient improvement so that the energy consumption for pumps can be reduced and the required temperature difference in heat exchangers lowered due to attractive thermophysical properties of ice-slurry. This paper partially throws light on the status of ice-slurry installations worldwide but also some investigations carried out on specific transport phenomena with ice slurry. The scope of this transport system investigation has partly been able to provide a basis for selection of distribution pumps and to investigate flow patterns in piping system components. Pressure loss coefficients in selected ABS-fittings have been measured to reveal the dependency on ice concentration. The viscosity of the fluid influences the pump performance, but the presence of solid particles might also decrease the performance. The investigation of pumps is primarily carried out to establish performance curves with ice slurry, and thereby provide a basis for the selection of pumps.
