Ice slurry production with a circulating fluidised bed heat exchanger.

Summary

The paper presents a fluidized bed ice slurry generator. It is an interesting alternative since it reduces investment costs and can operate with high heat transfer rates. Circulation of particles via a downcomer tube presents some interesting advantages such as an increased flexibility of operating parameters. First experiments with a circulating fluidised bed ice slurry generator are presented in this paper showing stable ice slurry production with heat transfer coefficients up to 3000 W/m2.K. The stable operating range was slightly smaller compared to stationary operation, but heat transfer coefficients were somewhat higher. It is believed that higher particle circulation rates than reported in this paper will lead to higher heat transfer coefficients and will increase the operating range.
