Summary
THE USE OF PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS FOR THE STORAGE OF ENERGY IS DISCUSSED INCLUDING WAX AND A CHEMICAL MIXTURE OF AMMONIUM AND SODIUM COMPOUNDS. ICE IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE MOST ADVANTAGEOUS AND A SYSTEM USING THIS AND AMMONIA AS THE REFRIGERANT IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE. FOR PRACTICAL PURPOSES R22 WAS CHOSEN FOR THE STUDY AND THE EQUIPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE STORAGE SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED. THE SYSTEM OFFERS SUBSTANTIAL COST SAVINGS FOR AIR CONDITIONING APPLICATIONS BUT THIS LARGELY DEPENDS ON LOCAL ELECTRICITY SUPPLY TARIFF STRUCTURES. THESE SAVINGS MAY BE REDUCED BY LOSS OF RENTABLE SPACE FOR THE STORE, AND THE HEAT GAINS TO THE STORE WHICH REPRESENT A SIGNIFICANT PROPORTION OF THE TOTAL ENERGY STORED. G.R.S.
