Summary

An ice storage system incorporated in an air cooled multi-zone direct expansion type split space conditioning system is discussed. The system consists of an outdoor unit with an inverter controlled compressor, a maximum of eight indoor units and an ice storage unit. At night, ice is made using low-cost electricity. During the day the system uses the ice to gain 35 to 40 deg C of refrigerant sub-cooling. Capacity of the system increases by 25% and the power cost decreases by more than 20%.
