Implementation of the heat capacity method for modelling the thermal performance of agglomerate stones containing PCM.

Summary
In this paper, the ability of the heat capacity method for modelling the thermal performance of agglomerate stones containing phase change materials is studied. For this purpose, the heat capacity method is implemented in the in-house developed numerical code HETRAN simulating heat and mass transfer in multi-layered materials. Differential scanning calorimetry tests at different heating rates reveal the influence of the heating rates to the effective specific heat profiles used in the heat capacity method, by changing the melting temperature and range, as well as the peak specific heat value. Predictions of the HETRAN code are compared to the experimental data indicating that the method can in general capture the physical characteristics of melting of the phase change material.
